Indian Trail Hardware, Inc was founded in 1984 by Bill and Mae Ola Workman after purchasing the business and land where it is currently situated from John Graber.  The population of Indian trail at that time was 1,200.  Shortly after purchasing the business they joined ACE Hardware as their main supplier.

In 1990, the Workmans purchased the adjoining lot and doubled the size of the existing store adding an additional 5000 Sq. ft. to the building.  ITH continued to grow along with the surrounding area.  During this time there was one Lowes located in Matthews and a Lowes in Monroe.  Now, there are 3 Lowes within 10 miles; one here in Indian Trail a short distance away and also a Home Depot in Matthews.  Also adding to the competition is the Super Wal-Mart as well as Lesco, John Deere, Florida Irrigation and others.

The Workman’s retired at the end of 1999 and sold the business to their daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Lamar Wingo. They moved here from LaGrange, Georgia with their daughter Hanna.  Karen previously held the position of Assistant Controller at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia and Lamar was a partner in the law firm of Hasty & Wingo, P.C. in LaGrange.

The Wingo’s expanded the footprint of ITH by purchasing the adjoining lots on either side of the existing property.  This allowed for the expansion of a landscaping bag goods drive through as well as expanding storage.  They also expanded the inside of the building taking in more space for retail display.

During the early 2000’s this area became one of the fastest growing counties in the nation.  With this came new competition as mentioned above.  Indian Trail Hardware continued to grow during this time by adding quality products not found in Big Box or other stores such as Stihl and Big Green Egg.  Names such as Yeti and the new Channel Lock lines were added to differentiate from the competition.

In 2010 due to a difference in retail philosophy and the loss of an unsubstantiated amount of funds by ACE Corporation, ITH decided to look for a new supplier.  After a long search we decided to leave ACE and joined the Do It Best Corp. as our main supplier.  DIB has been a great match to our ideals and how we want to move forward in the retail business.

Hanna has now finished college and joined the family business after a brief venture in the “real world” of Information Technology.  Hardware seems to be in her blood as she was raised in the store from the age of 6.  She has brought new vision and attitude to the store with her youthful outlook.  One of the things she likes to do is have several Pop-Up Markets a year in our parking lots featuring local artists with their handmade products. This has been a popular event for the community.

At ITH we continue to change with the community and thanks to our loyal customers we have been successful in offering quality products at a quality price along with great customer service.
